Bring something for show & tell, your camera, a tripod (if you have one), and one piece of your work to photograph (ideally 36” x 48” or smaller). Sherri is making a pot of chili and will provide lettuce for a salad for lunch. Please bring a topping for the salad that we will all share (veggies, cheese, croutons, etc.)

We will have foamcore boards, two small quilt racks, a couple of tripods, and light bars on hand for everyone to use.

SAQA Central Texas Meeting Reminder

Mark your calendars...we're taking a field trip! Make plans to meet us in historic Blanco this Saturday, March 14, to checkout the new Uptown Blanco arts & entertainment center. Visit their website www.uptownblanco.com.

Our SAQA Texas Region Trunk Show "A Texas Experience" will be on display and will remain up through the Bluebonnet Shop Hop in mid-April. The Uptown Blanco Restaurant and Textile Studio are located on the town square next door to each other. Our quilts will be on display in the hall that connects the restaurant and textile studio.

12:30 pm Gather for lunch at the Uptown Blanco Restaurant - next door to the Blanco Textile Studio - meet in the hallway in front of our quilts.

2 pm Visit Uptown Blanco Textile Studio and view the quilts in the Texas Region Trunk Show

If you are going to come for lunch, please let me know and I will make a reservation for the group -- call me 512-736-2971 or send an email to kim@quilting-adventures.com. You do not need to let me know if you will NOT be joining us for lunch.

UPDATE: Central Texas Circle Meeting

A few reminders for Saturday's Central Texas meeting:  We'll have BBQ from City Market brought in for lunch. If you're able to, please bring cash to make settling/splitting the tab a breeze. This morning the weather forecast looked a bit better for overnight Friday/Saturday morning, but there is still potential for freezing rain. Please use your best judgement when deciding whether to hit the road and, as always, your personal safety is most important. Finally, monoprinting is generally not a messy process but you might want to wear clothes you don't mind getting paint on or bring an overshirt or apron.

Connie Akers will be leading us in a monoprinting workshop this month! If you aren't familiar with monoprinting, do a search on You Tube for "monoprinting" or "gelli printing" for all kinds of fun videos to introduce you to this simple and SUPER FUN surface design technique.

 

Here are items you should bring with you:

1. Gelli Plate™ if you have one. You do not need to buy a gelli plate if you don't have one, we will have some extras to share. They are available at gelliarts.com or amazon.com if you would like to purchase one. If you want to try your hand a making your own gelli plate before investing in one, Linda Germain has instructions for making your own here; the password for the site is "maketheplate". Please note the password is all one word, lowercase, and you do not include the quotation marks. I have not made a gelli plate myself, but understand from a few reliable sources that Linda's method makes a very useable and durable plate. I have purchased a Stampendous brand plate that Michael's, and I believe Hobby Lobby, carry. I was not happy with it at all and DO NOT recommend it.
2. Acrylic Paints. Marie is bringing lots (LOTS!!!) of acrylic paints to share. If you have favorite brands or colors you like to work with, please bring them with you.
3. Brayer(s)
4. Fabric to print on -- solid cottons, muslin, silk, whatever you want to play with -- fat quarter size or smaller. I believe the largest plate we will have on hand is 10"x12".
5. Paper to print on (if you want). Plain printer/copier paper or cardstock is fine. We will also have a stash of deli paper on hand for you to use.
6. Scrap paper (plain printer paper, newsprint, etc.) to clean your brayer on. This also gives you very interesting results and you'll be able to add it to your paper stash.
7. Stencils, stamps and/or your favorite markmaking materials. Connie, Marie and I will also bring markmaking supplies to share.

If you would like to host a meeting, lead a workshop to teach us your favorite technique or know of something fun we could do as a group, don't hesitate to let me know!

San Antonio/Austin Circle - November 21, 2009

The San Antonio and Austin Circles met at Laurie Brainerd's loft in San Antonio. After a delightful potluck lunch, we quickly got down to the business at hand.

We discussed the survey results, reiterating that we all must ask for what we want of the Circle. The combined Austin and San Antonio circles are meeting on the 2nd Saturday of the month. The January and March meetings have already been scheduled in Austin and will remain unchanged. In May, it will bounce to San Antonio. The host gets to decide the time the meeting starts.

We then went on to "Tells," which were more art business related. A lively discussion ensued. One of the outcomes is a plan to incorporate formal critique sessions into the meetings. It will start when we line up a facilitator hopefully for the March meeting, but knowing that logistics will have to remain flexible.

A group challenge was made for those that like having deadlines to keep them focused. The word that was randomly picked for inspiration is "covert."

Afterwards, we had our "Shows" and then ended the meeting with a quick tour of Laurie's studio.

It was wonderful to see the group, which has been meeting for a year now, really gelling and ready to take the group up a notch with more activities and articulating individuals' needs of the Circle.
