Caprock Circle Report

The Caprock circle met Saturday November 10 during rain, a dust storm and a cool evening.  Isn’t West Texas great – never boring.  We had a wonderful morning workshop working on collage quilts with photos, torn fabric, embroidery bits and pieces, cheesecloth (which we colored with paint), earrings, etc. . No sewing, just quilt it all down.  Everyone shared their bits and pieces and I think we went home with more than we came with.  We also had demos on gold leaf and an edge finish with yarn.  We gained two new members.  Janet Moran drove 3 hours to meet with us!
After lunch, we elected a new Vice President – Sandra Stephenson, and I was reelected as President.  Then we learned about the Life and Quilts of Valerie Hill.  She is having a one woman show soon, and she is in production mode.  Ellie Kreneck, along with her husband Lynnwood, are having a show in Carlsbad, NM next week.

It was a wonderful day of sharing our art and quilting passion.

Report prepared by Jean Grimes.

San Antonio/Austin Circle Report

It was a great day in New Braunfels!  Kim Buchannan was our gracious host.  Sherri McCauley, Pam Lowe and I came down from Austin; Vou Best came in from Seguin, and Mary Jane McCollum of New Braunfels came to her first Circle meeting.
Kim gave a fabulous presentation on perspective - one, two, and three point (we all lost count when it got to work by M.C. Escher) and aerial perspectives were all reviewed.  Kim had lots of examples, used her computer to show the horizon line and vanishing points, and Vou brought a piece under construction she thought could use better perspective.  We all left with a great set of notes and lots of ideas.
Show and Tell was wonderful, as always, and the food was great, too.  I was able to update everyone on the "doings" in SAQA and SAQA-Texas, including:
Plans for an all-Texas event in 2013 - Heather, Suzan and I (and maybe Kim) will be meeting with Karey Bresenhan on December 3 to visit her Creativity Center and talk about what kind of event we could hold there.  Pam Lowe and Kim Buchannan have agreed to help work on that project once we get some particulars in pace.
Plans for a Texas Mini-Quilt Trunk Show - Vou Best is working on a Texas Trunk Show for 2014.  We are working out some details - what size piece; whether they will be for sale; etc., but the important thing to know is that we will have the trunk travel around Texas.  Suzan is looking for a spot in Houston; Heather is planning a site in Dallas/Fort Worth; I am committed to having the trunk in Austin in Sept. 2014.  More details will follow.
Website info - We went through the calls for entry listed on the SAQA site.  If you have not checked out the site; go to www.saqa.com then login (if you do not know or remember your login info, please contact one of the Reps).  Once you get to the Member Home Page, you can get to the SAQA Entries Info from either the Table of Contents on the left side OR the Quick Links in the body of the page.  Check it out!  There are several interesting exhibits being put together, including one for members who have NOT been part of a SAQA exhibit in the last three years.
Texas Blog - We also talked about the Texas Blog (http://saqa-texas.blogspot.com/).  Check it out if you have not visited lately.  We are working on a new feature - a Members Gallery.  We don't have all the bugs worked out yet, but some test pieces are up for sharing.  (We are using some new software and need to add identifying info, like the names of the artist and the piece, so it is not there yet, but it is coming along....)  Suzan Engler is the real moving force behind this, so say thanks next time you see her.  She has learned how to add a watermark, but we have not decided on whether that is the best way to go - it is a bit distracting.
I AM SAQA - Anyone who stopped by the SAQA booth in Houston may have noticed the "I am SAQA" postcards.  This is a new project that you will be hearing about.  SAQA is working toward making postacrds available to all members - so we can each have some advertising.  More will come directly from SAQA.
That's the rundown for now.  Hope to see you at one of our 2013 meetings!!!
Lynne Allen
NEXT MEETINGS:
I would like to set up the meetings for 2013 in advance.  So far I have 4 volunteers - Kim (New Braunfels); Sara (north Austin); Sherri (Lakeway); and me (south Austin).  It would be great to have a meeting or two in San Antonio.  In any event, it is time to let me know if you are interested in hosting, and when.  We meet either the first or second Saturday in January, March, May, July, September, and November.  The Saturday chosen depends on two things - holiday/conference schedules and the host's preference.  We will work out topics/activities with each host. Send me a note (lynne.esq@gmail.com) or give me a call (512 305 3278) to hold up your hand!

Houston Circle Meeting Report - November 2012

The Houston SAQA Circle Circle members took advantage of the glorious Texas fall weather and spent half of the November meeting in Ruthann Fox's backyard.  Suzanne Kittrell taught us various techniques for applying foil to fabrics.

Gold leaf applied to a quilted and beaded piece (Suzanne Kittrell)

Suzanne Kittrell demonstrating the use of adhesives, stamps, stencils, brushes and fusible web.

Gold Leaf over stitching (Suzanne Kittrell)

Fusible interfacing strips and fusible thread ( Kate Owens)

Brush stoked highlighted by foil ( Suzanne Kittrell)

We also planned out several meetings for the coming year.  In January, we are going to bring/discuss books that have changed our artistic lives (with the possibility of an in-depth study of one or more later in the year).  With creativity exercises in March and then color theory in May we will be off to a great year.

Time: 10:30 – 2:00

Supply list for workshop:

Suzanne and Ruthann will have the foiling material that we will iron onto the fabric and other needed supplies such as an iron, parchment paper and adhesive tape, containers for foil adhesive, newspapers, a hair dryer and a few books for inspiration.

Report from the Caprock Circle

Ten members and one visitor met Saturday, Aug 25 in Wolfforth, Texas (near Lubbock).  Denise Bean found us through the SAQA email and is now our newest member.

Our morning workshop was Inklique facilitated by Cinde Ebling.  We each brought a photo and, using a light box and many colored pencils, drew our photo onto cloth.  What a great way to add art to our art.

We have had several shows this spring and summer and they have all been well received.  Our quilts finally all came home and now we are getting ready for the Ogallala Quilt Show in Dimmitt in April where we are the featured guild.  Many thanks to Valerie Hill and Linda Fisher for their pickup and deliveries at the different venues.

Other area shows: Portales NM Oct 18-21 Ellie Kreneck is the featured quilter, www.portales.com
Roswell, NM Quilt Show  Sept 21-22  www.pecosvalleyquilters.com
Ogallala Ceta Canyon Retreat  Sept 21-23  a weekend of sewing, eating and friendship  www.ogallalaquilters.org

Donniece Smith estacadostudio.blogspot.com was featured for our Life and Quilts of....  It's always great to understand and artist's motivation and inspiration.

Muff and I then shared photos of Italy and the quilts we made in the studio of Averil Stuart-Head at the Abruzzo School of Creative Art abruzzoschoolofcreativeart.com or avrilstuarthead.com.  We will present a workshop at our next meeting, Nov 10th on some of the techniques we learned there.

San Antonio/Austin Circle Report

The July meeting was actually lovely.  Vou Best is a terrific host, and those of us who car-pooled from Austin had a great time all day.  (Thank you, Sherri, for driving!)  In attendance were:  Vou Best (host), her daughter Terri, Shirley (this is where my memory gets vague, as I do not remember her last name - sorry, Shirley), Susan Mayfield, Marianne Swim, Patty Koeniger, Sherri McCauley, and Lynne Allen.  I THINK that was everyone - and again, my apologies to anyone I forgot.
We started the meeting with stories.  Each of us discussed at least one positive event that had shaped our lives and our art.  It was very interesting, and even covered some less positive events that brought positive outcomes.  It is good to think about and review these things from time to time.
On the business side of things, we reviewed upcoming events in Texas - QuiltFest in Austin (Sept. 14-16), Style Show in Austin (Sept. 29), Houston International Quilt Festival (November 1-4, 2013), QuiltCon in Austin (Feb. 21-24, 2013), SAQA Conference in Santa Fe (April 25-28, 2013), SDA Conference in San Antonio (June 6-9, with workshops June 1-5 and 10-14, 2013).

REMINDERS:  NO TEXAS MINI QUILT SHOWCASE IN HOUSTON THIS YEAR - the Reps are working on an alternative showcase and state-side events in 2013 and 2014 (info to come out soon), but WE STILL NEED VOLUNTEERS TO STAFF THE SAQA BOOTH - SEE THE TEXAS BLOG (http://saqa-texas.blogspot.com/) FOR MORE INFO AS TIME DRAWS NEAR
NO SAN ANTONIO/AUSTIN MEETING IN SEPTEMBER (Meet your friends and colleagues at QuiltFest instead!)

After a great lunch and fabulous Show and Tell, we adjourned to Vou's "outside" studio, where she is now working with glass and china and glue.  We broke into two groups - one to play with glass and china and the other to look through old magazines for inspiration and to talk about how to "curate" a mini show from Show and Tell pieces.  Next meeting we plan to leave the Show and Tell up until everyone has talked about their work and then each choose a small number of pieces we could see as a stand alone exhibit.

The Texas Reps are meeting every other month to work on some State-wide activities and to share ideas on how to make the Circles "sing".  We will be sending out news in the months to come.
Hope to see you all in November - at the Houston International Quilt Festival and/or the November Circle meeting!

Reminder - Houston Circle Meeting

SAQA Houston Circle May Meeting
Date:  May 12, 2012
Time: 10:30 - 2:00
Location: RuthAnn Fox's Home
May Workshop:  3 Embellishments in ONE DAY!

Embellishments are all the rage is seems right now and one is only hindered by their imagination.  Suzanne Kittrell will demonstrate some of her techniques and welcome others to share how they can achieve a three dimensional look onto their fabric art.
Creating these pieces of 3-D art can be challenging and a lot of fun.  But be aware that is involves hand work using basically thread and material and beads and whatever else you want to incorporate into these 'embellishments'  as they are truly tiny pieces of art.

1. Demonstration:  Creating a 'Bug' or 'Insect' from beads.  Suzanne will demonstrate how with printed instructions to get you started.
2. Demonstration:  Creating glittery 'Logs of Thread' for a raised surface treatment on fabric.
3. Demonstration:  Creating 'Fabric Beads' from wrapping colorful yarns and embroidery threads, with or without beaded embellishment.

You will need to bring:
-A basic sewing kit of:
      Your scissors
A package of favorite sharp needles
      Thimble if you use one
-Plastic grips for pulling needles through thick pieces of material
-Some spools of colored thread (Dual Duty and/or Quilting threads)
-A skein of Metallic Embroidery thread in either Gold, Silver or Copper
-Some skeins of colorful, regular embroidery threads
-Beads, if you have any.  Suzanne will be bringing specific beads to do the 'Bugs and Insects'.  But you might toss in a few unusual larger beads or buttons; anything that interests you and you think you might like to experiment with.
-Beading thread but Suzanne will bring some so it is not necessary unless you already have some.
-Good eyeglasses to wear
-Pencil and paper

Suzanne will provide pieces of material quilted and ready to be sewn onto, the threads and beads to make up these embellishments and a few other things we may need to create with.
I think this should be a lot of fun and there should be a lot of ideas thrown back and forth over the sewing tables.  Don't forget to bring your lunch and show 'n' tell.

Please RSVP to houstonsaqa@gmail.com so that your name can be provided to the security gate at Ruthann's neighborhood.  The location address will be listed on the Yahoo group and emailed to all who RSVP.

Hope to see you all there,

A new SAQA Circle has begun in the Texas Panhandle!  They met on February 11 and go by the name CAPROCK ART QUILTERS.  Muff Fregia led the morning workshop on silk screen printing.  After lunch and a business meeting, there was show and tell/critique of current work and a viewing of SAQA "This is a Quilt" Trunk F.
The initial members of this group have been meeting for some time as a general art quilt group, and were challenged a year ago to create 2-sided pieces approximately 18"x96", with the theme Textured Earth & Sky.  These exciting pieces of art will be hung as a group at two shows this year.
NEXT MEETING May 12.  The morning workshop will be deconstructed screen printing and the afternoon will feature the works of Ellie Kreneck.  For more details and directions, contact:  Jean Grimes -  jean@grimesengineering.com

12 Voices From One Exhibit

Twelve Voices from One
2010 Art Cloth Mastery Program Exhibition
Students of Jane Dunnewold’s Art Cloth Mastery Program will exhibit at San Antonio’s Radius Gallery from March 29 through May 31, 2012.  Open to the public, a reception will be on Thursday, March 29, from 5:30pm – 7:30pm.
Based in San Antonio, Jane Dunnewold is a world renowned, award winning mixed media artist. An author of books and DVD’s related to the subject of art cloth, Dunnewold exhibits and conducts workshops domestically and internationally.
The twelve exhibiting students from around the world studied the elements of design, dyeing textiles, surface manipulation and mixed media applications as they honed their individual styles. Five week long studio sessions are supplemented with rigorous interim assignments during the two-and-a-half-year endeavor. The exhibition is the culmination of the participants’ efforts.
Designed and implemented by instructor/artist Jane Dunnewold, the Art Cloth Mastery Program is unique in its ability to provide advanced education in contemporary surface design practices. The program is enrolled each year from a roster of applicants who must provide evidence of previous experience and serious intent, and is limited to twelve students per term.
Each participating artist will present a short lecture on the development of her work. Presentations will showcase a range of inspiration and technique. Sessions will be scheduled on Tuesday, March 27, and Wednesday, March 28, at a time to be announced. Free and open to the public.
The Radius is located at 106 Auditorium Circle in downtown San Antonio.  The gallery is open from 8:30am – 4:30pm Monday – Friday.
