Date & Time
May 14, 2016
10:30 am

Where
St. Philip Presbyterian, located on San Felipe near Loop 610.

1.     Extended Show & Tell – Please bring your current project or next project. Finished or unfinished is okay. Share what you’re working on with our creative members.

2.     FABRIC DONATION COLLECTION AND FABRIC SWAP. Do you have fabric you no longer want or need? Bring it to the next SAQA meeting. We will be collecting fabric to donate to charity. Please bring your fabric in a box of some kind (plastic bags are too flimsy). We will accept all types of fabric that is usable and unsoiled. All SAQA members and guests will be invited to look through all the fabric and take what you want! A true fabric swap – you might find some treasure. What’s leftover will be donated. We hope you’ll participate.

3.     Suzan Engler will present a recap of the presentation given by the Exhibition Committee at the national convention. This is an excellent opportunity to hear about the growth in SAQA’s impressive exhibition schedule.

Bring your lunch. There is a microwave provided in the room.

Any questions, please email me directly (do not reply to this email).
Thanks.
See you Saturday, May 14th.

September Art Quilt Workshop in New York with Dr. Sandra Sider

Dr. Sandra Sider, Curator of the Texas Quilt Museum, is holding a workshop in Stony Point, New York (about 1 hour drive north of Manhattan).

Creativity Workshop: Art Quilt Inspirations

September 25-29, 2016 (Sunday - Friday)

This workshop is based on the principles of art and design developed in Sandra Sider’s critique workshops and written about in the volumes of her Studio Quilt monograph series and illustrated in her new book 1000 Quilt Inspirations. Limited to a maximum of twelve participants, the workshop will allow Sandra to spend considerable amounts of time each day working one-on-one with quilters, evaluating their work and suggesting possible directions for developing each quilt. She will also teach the basics of monotype printing, stamp printing, and photo transfer, as well as cyanotype on fabric if we have a sunny day. The final morning will consist of critiques, with participants sharing and discussing their works in progress.

Quilters should bring materials to begin a new quilt top, their sewing supplies and tools, a sewing machine and an iron. Class is suitable for all levels of quilters, but excellent sewing skills and expertise with one's sewing machine is a must.

Tuition for the week is $500. There is also a materials fee of $40. Total cost is dependent on the lodging selected, from $450 to $775. It does include all meals.

Thank you to Hope Wilmarth (Spring), Katrina Wright (Abeline) and Gail Dentler (Victoria) for your new submissions to our Texas Region 12x12 Trunk Show!

2016 Central Texas Meetings Update

FIELD TRIP NEXT WEEK

Sherri McCauley and I are going to La Grange on Friday, February 26, to see the current exhibit at the Texas Quilt Museum and the Art in Fiber show at the Copper Shade Tree Gallery. If anyone is interested in joining us, here is the plan:

Meetup at Bucee's on Hwy 71 in Bastrop at 10:30 am. Anyone who wants to carpool is welcome to drop their car at Bucee's and ride with me. I can fit +2 comfortably or +3 with three in the backseat. Please be aware we are on no specific timeline. If you need to be home by a certain time, you can meet us at Bucee's and caravan in your own car so that you can leave when you need to.

We will make a quick stop at the Colorado Valley Quilt Guild's show at the Fayette County Fairgrounds in La Grange. Then over to the Quilt Museum where selections from SAQA's Wild Fabrications exhibit is on display along with the Modern Quilt Guild's first juried exhibit for a museum venue, the Magna Carta quilts, and selected prize winners from IQA's judged show at Festival last year. Then we'll zip up to the Copper Shade Tree Gallery in Round Top to see Ginny Eckley & Sue Ennis' quilts in The Art in Fiber show. Somewhere in there we will have lunch at a place and time to be determined.

PLEASE EMAIL ME kim@quilting-adventures.com if you want to meet me at Bucee's in Bastrop so I know to expect you!

MARCH 12 MEETING

My apologies to everyone, but I had to cancel the March 12 meeting due to a conflict with my schedule and lack of volunteers to help organize the meeting.

MAY 14 MEETING

Our May 14 meeting will be Saturday, May 14, from 10 am to 2 pm at the Texas Art League in Luling. The address is 509 E. Davis St.  Thank you Kelly Allen for reserving this fantastic space for us again!

We are planning an interactive program and as soon as I have firm details, I will publish them here on the Texas Region blog and on our Facebook Events page.

ASSISTANCE NEEDED FOR FUTURE MEETINGS

I'm still looking for assistance with planning our July 9, September 10 and November 12 meetings. Do you know of a place we can meet?  Would you like to host a meeting at your home? Do you know of an upcoming fiber art event or other event of interest to our membership that we can organize an outing to? Would you like to give a demo or workshop of your favorite technique? If yes, get in touch with me!

I've had several members express an interest in having another critiquing session. If you have a work(s) that you would like to get feedback on in a friendly and supportive environment, shoot me an email and I'll work on getting another session scheduled.

Volunteer Opportunity

The SAQA Exhibition Committee is looking for a member to serve as Trunk Show Coordinator for the 2017 SAQA Trunk Show. This volunteer opportunity is for SAQA's INTERNATIONAL trunk show; not to be confused with our Texas Region Trunk Show.

Here are the details...

The Trunk Show Coordinator is responsible for answering questions about the Trunk Show, receiving the artwork to be included in the show, and preparing the work for travel. Your postal mailbox will need to be able to handle a 10"x17" envelope that the artwork will be shipped in and you would need space within your home to store the 400+ expected envelopes and the 5 trunks that will eventually hold the artwork.

Timeline:
Beginning in March 2016 -  Familiarize yourself with the trunk show prospectus. Answering occasional member questions via email after the prospectus is posted on the SAQA website. Questions can also be forwarded to the Exhibition Committee if you are unsure of the reply.  Most questions arise due to members not reading the prospectus thoroughly.

September 1 - November 30, 2016 - Envelopes containing artwork and entry forms will begin to arrive at your address.  Send an email acknowledging that the artwork has arrived - the artist's email address will be on the entry form.

January - March 2017 -  Hold one or more "mounting parties" to photograph and attach the artwork to 9” x 12” black mounting boards, along with the corresponding label and then slip the mounted and labeled work into a plastic sleeve.  SAQA provides the mounting boards, labels, sleeves, and trunks for shipping.

Once the artwork is prepared, packed into the SAQA provided trunks and shipped, the Coordinator job is done!

If you have any questions or would like additional information, please contact Suzan Engler, Vice Chair of the Exhibition Committee, at suzan@suzanengler.com.

If you are interested in being the 2017 Trunk Show Coordinator, please contact Suzan directly or one of the Texas Region Representatives.
