Houston Circle Meeting Nov 14

Mark your calendars for our Nov 14 meeting in Houston. All SAQA members are invited to attend.

Suzan Engler has kindly offered to share her experience in working with digital printing, specifically companies like Spoonflower. She will explain how to prepare images for printing and the tips and techniques for successful one of a kind digital textile prints. Suzan is an award-winning art quilts and a Superior Threads Star.

Please bring your current and finished art quilts to share with the group. We will spend the first hour in an extended show and tell and we look forward to seeing and discussing what you are working on.

CENTRAL TEXAS CIRCLE MEETING
1 - 3 pm The Scrappy Quilter
1208 FM 78, Suite J in Schertz (San Antonio area)

PROGRAM: GROUP CRITIQUE SESSION and SHOW & TELL
If you own Lyric Kinard's Art + Quilt: Design Principles and Creativity Exercises please bring it with you.

Our program this month builds on Sandra Sider's critiquing art quilts workshop with a group critique session in a friendly and supportive environment. If you do not have a piece you want critiqued, you won't be left out in the cold. Everyone will benefit from participating in a guided critique session that will help you learn how to look at art quilts and at your own work with a more critical eye.

Do you have a work in progress that you're stuck on and would like some help on how to move forward? One that has been rejected from a show or two and you want to get some suggestions on how you could improve it? Maybe you would like to get opinions from your fiber friends on whether or not a piece is "show worthy"? What ever the case may be, we need your quits to have a successful critique session.

PLEASE EMAIL KIM BUCHMANN kim@quilting-adventures.com NO LATER THAN THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 12 IF YOU WILL BE BRINGING SOMETHING FOR THE GROUP TO CRITIQUE. We have only 2 hours for this meeting and I need to know how much time to allot for the critique portion.

If you don't have something you want the group to critique, please bring 1 piece - one, uno, un, ein, один - for show & tell. I was recently at a retreat where we had a very interesting discussion about how endless show & tell is at many guild meetings because people give no thought to what they want to say (we've all been there!) and how different guilds deal with this issue.

Be prepared with your elevator speech about your work -- you'll be allotted 2 minutes to tell us about your quilt. If you aren't familiar with the "elevator speech" concept, email me kim@quilting-adventures.com and I'll explain it to you. When deciding what to say, ask yourself why you selected THIS piece? What's the most important thing(s) you want to convey to us in two minutes or less? Was it made for a special person or occasion? Is it a cool technique you just learned that you want to share with us? Is it a quilt you won an award with? Just remember, you'll have 2 minutes for the what, when, why and/or how!
Again, please bring ONE piece for show & tell and be prepared with a two minute or less elevator speech. We have only two hours for this meeting -- The Scrappy Quilter closes at 3 pm and the staff will be ready to go home.

1 pm MEETING
Remember to bring Show and Tell projects. At the meeting we will also have a *CREATIVE SUPPLIES GARAGE SALE* benefiting CAQ. Start NOW collecting your extra creative supplies that you are no longer interested in, but would likely be someone else's treasure. Price them and bring them along with cash/checks to purchase the treasures you want to take home.

SHIBORI is the Japanese name for specific methods of making pattern and texture on textiles. The techniques can be divided into 4 categories:  1) Binding, 2) Stitching, 3) Folding with Binding or Clamping and 4) Wrapping. In this class we will make samples of each of these techniques, and dye them with Indigo. At the end of the workshop you will have samples that can be placed in a notebook for reference or that can be used to make a sample shibori quilt.

WORKSHOP PREP & SUPPLY YOU BRING:
Prep and Supplies
Each person should bring 2 yards of bleached and mercerized cotton that is 1) PFD (prepared for dyeing) or 2) washed in 140 degree water with detergent or Synthrapol if you have it. PFD cotton can be purchased over the internet from Dharma Trading or Pro Chemical Dyes. You can use non-mercerized and non-bleached fabric if you have it already. But the color will not end up with a good bright or deep value. Please iron the fabric, as it is easier to work with than when it is really wrinkled from the dryer.
From 1 yard of fabric, precut 18 - 20 8” x 11” pieces of fabric
From ½ yard of fabric, precut 18 - 6” x 6” pieces of fabric
The 8” x 11” pieces will serve as samples you can place in page protectors for a notebook. The 6” x 6” pieces can be used to make a sample quilt. The balance of the fabric can be dyed solid to use as sashing, borders, or other pieces in your sample quilt.
Dishwashing gloves & apron
