North Texas Circle Meeting!

It's almost January, and that means it is almost time for our January North Texas Circle meeting!  We will be meeting on

January 18, 1 pm, at Petit Atelier, 2952 Commerce St, Dallas, Texas 75226.

Our program will be “The Psychology of Creation.”  How do you start a new project?   How do you find inspiration?  What is your method --  do you sketch, photograph, make notes?  Or do you just jump in and create?  Bring your sketchbooks, photographs, etc., and we'll discuss our creative process and the things that inspire us.

See you there!

Caprock Art Quiler Circle Meeting Report

monoprint.JPG
The Caprock Art Quilter Circle met Nov 9-10 for a workshop on mono printing on gelatin.  Ten members spent Friday evening catching up on artful goings on in West Texas and Eastern New Mexico (as well as Houston quilts, classes and shopping!) and making gelatin.

On Saturday morning, Janet Moran taught us to make prints using ink and several brands of paint.  It was great fun and now we have several pieces each as a” first layer”.

In business, we elected a new secretary, Nancy Woods and Muff Fregia picked up several pieces to hang at the Midland Theater during the holiday season.

Show and tell is always a great time to share and of course we had a few critiques. Next meeting will be February 7-8.

North Texas Circle Meeting Recap

The kickoff meeting for the North Texas SAQA Circle was a wonderful success!  16 members met in the home of Heather Pregger.  The group decided:

We will meet quarterly, on the third Saturday of the month in January, April, August and November, from 1 to 4.  Members will have the option of meeting for lunch near the meeting place beforehand.

We will meet at Petit Atelier in the Deep Ellum neighborhood of Dallas.  They have very kindly, thanks to Carol Trice, offered us their classroom.

We will have a critique session, tentatively scheduled for August.  We will hire a local artist/professor/gallery owner from outside of the fiber art genre to look at our work.

We will find a venue to host a show of members’ work in early 2015.

Our next meeting will be January 18 at Petit Atelier, pending the availability of the meeting room.  The program will be “The Psychology of Creation.”  Members will share insights about their inspirations and the starting of new projects.

Report from the Caprock Circle

We had two great shows in the area. The Midland Show was Oct 5 and the High Plains Show was last weekend. CAQ was well represented at both. Now it's time to recuperate from Houston and then CAQ. Then Thanksgiving and Christmas.  Tis the season...

At lunch, we'll have our business meeting. Our nominating committee (Denise and Pam) will present a nomination for secretary and we will vote. Then more printing.

Please bring any pieces you want to exhibit at the Midland Theater (15% commission, please price your piece) and a piece for critique.

Please RSVP for class, overnight, meals.

Supply list for class from Janet:

Here are the supplies for those that are taking the class need to bring.  The kit includes all the paint, gelatin, fabric, ect that they will use.  The students need to bring an apron and rubber gloves (or any kind of glove to keep their hands clean).  I will have a hand out with info that they might need and room to make notes.

 See you in November!

SAQA Texas Retreat at Great Expecations Creativity Center

16 members of SAQA Texas met at the Great Expectations Creativity Center in LaGrange, Texas, last weekend to work on entries for our upcoming show,A Texas Experience.  And it's a cliche, but a great time was had by all.  Really and truly, it was a fun and productive weekend.

The Center itself is wonderful -- it's beautifully equipped, well lit, and set on a hill in the gorgeous countryside between Round Top and LaGrange.
Great Expectations Creativity Center
We had planned the weekend to jumpstart the upcoming traveling SAQA Texas show.  Members can submit a 12" x 12" quilt with a Texas theme.  If the member wishes to list his or her quilt for sale during the show, he or she must submit four quilts (so we can replace his or her quilt in the exhibit).  It was so much fun to see everyone's ideas take shape.

There were several projects that were at least completed tops by noon on Sunday.  Kim's Brazos River landscape, Sara's cow, chickadee and Texas flag (improv style), Janice's denim and diamond piece,  Suzanne's checkerboard background.  My pieces are the four on the upper right.
A few of the projects in progress
On Friday night, we at Mexican food at Las Fuentes in LaGrange, and then returned to the Center in time to see a fabulous sunset.

If you are a SAQA member and live in Texas, check out our "Call for Entry." Entries are due September 1.

Houston Circle March Meeting Report

The Houston Circle met at Ruthann Fox’s home on March 9.  We discussed the upcoming SAQA Texas Regional Meeting in La Grange, the SAQA Texas A Texas Experience call for entry and copyright infringement issues that artists face.

After show-n-tell and lunch, Ruthann led us through a creativity exercise interpreting an inspiration photo using only black, white, gray, and one color.  The exercise helped us to identify values and was also great fun.  Thanks so much Ruthann!

There will be no Houston Circle meeting in Houston during May due to the SAQA Texas Regional meeting.  I hope to see many of you in La Grange.
