It has only been two months since our last meeting, but seems longer. We are looking forward to see all of you again and hope you will share any work you were able to create over this busy time. Laurel Cull has generously offered to host this meeting at her home.

We will have one of the 2012 "This is a Quilt" SAQA trunk shows to view and discuss. I have looked at them only briefly so far, but I think you will enjoy some surprises.

North Texas Dinner for Sandra Sider

Jules Rushing will be hosting Sandra Sider at her home during her visit to SAQA-DFW and DAFA.

She will arrive October 22nd and Jules would like to host a "Covered Dish" cookout at her home that evening. The evening will start at 6pm.

Please bring something to throw on the grill and a covered dish. Jules will provide the plates, silverware and beverages.

Fort Worth Critique Session with Sandra Sider

Sandra Sider, the President of Studio Art Quilt Associates will be in Fort Worth on Sunday, October 23 at 3:00 pm, and she is going to host a critique session.

The purpose of the session is to learn as a group how to help each other discuss design principals and consider how to improve or otherwise move forward with our art. Each participant may bring ONE piece of work - something that is not yet complete and for which you want some direction/advice about the next step(s) OR you may bring a completed piece.
Sandra is an artist, curator and critic, as well as the President of SAQA. She has been making quilts for 30 years. You can read more about her on her website www.sandrasider.com.

Sandra will be in North Texas to host a critique session at the Dallas Area Fiber Artists meeting on October 24. She has graciously agreed to include a Fort Worth stop to her itinerary.

I hope all of you can come join the conversation! Please let me know if you can be here -- Sandra would like to have to know have many quilts she will be critiquing, and she would like to know whether you are bringing an unfinished project or a completed quilt.

Third Time is a Charm -- Call for Volunteers for IQG SAQA Booth in November in Houston

Volunteers not only have a great deal of fun, and get to meet lots of other SAQA members, but working a 2 hour shift gets you into Festival free on the day that you work. What a deal!

Thanks to everyone who has volunteered so far, we have nearly filled up the all the time slots. But a few remain.

There are several slots on Wednesday, November 2nd. Preview Night is always busy, so we need to make sure the booth is fully manned.

Thursday, Friday and Saturday closing shifts (5 pm to 7 pm),

Sunday is still pretty empty.

2. This exhibit is not juried and is not an official SAQA sponsored exhibit.
3. The received by date of October 17 is for the quilt(s), entry form and check.

Naomi Adams–Quilt National ‘11

Congratulations to SAQA Texas quilter, Naomi Adams, who was juried into Quilt National ‘11 with her quilt “Greek”. She was also given the award for Most Innovative Use of the Medium.

Quilt National 2011: The Best of Contemporary Quilts has been released by Lark Books. You will be pleased to see that the photo reproduction of the artwork in this catalog is considerably better than the last one. In a number of cases, a detail photo has been included.

San Antonio/Austin Circle Meeting

The next meeting of the Austin/San Antonio Circle will be on July 9, 2011, at 10:00 am, at the home of Dee Merrell, in Dripping Springs.

PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS A CHANGE OF VENUE FROM PREVIOUS ANNOUNCEMENTS.

At our July meeting, we still plan to get some inspiration from the world around us, as we gather materials from around Dee's home to use for making sun prints.

Sara Sharp will lead us in playing with sunprints. To participate, you need to bring some white fabric that has been washed and ironed. (It does NOT need to be soda-soaked.) Sara has worked most often with 100% cotton fabric, but we can experiment with other fibers. The size of the pieces we can use will depend on how many people attend and how much table space is available, as each piece needs to dry flat.

If you have it, please also bring Transparent setacolor fabric paints. There will be some available to share, so if you don't already have some, just be prepared to reimburse those who bring paint.

You may also want to bring some things from home to use as a resist/print item. Sara suggests things like paperclips, hangers, stencils - anything that will produce a definite shape.

If you have some board or strong cardboard you can cover with plastic, you might want to bring that along to move your piece(s) from the tables to the ground in order to make room for more pieces at the tables.

Bring something to share for lunch, and, if you wish, bring a towel and swim clothes to cool off in the pool.

Texas Reps Meet in Austin

The four Texas co-reps met this past weekend at Lynne Allen's lovely home in Austin. We enjoyed getting to know each other and catching up on what SAQA is doing in different areas of the state.

Among the items discussed was the SAQA trunk show which will be travelling to as many different venues as we can schedule. We are finalizing the Call for Entries for the SAQA-TX @ Houston 2011. The details will be announced soon so you can start working on ideas for your entries. We think you will be happy to know that your work will be for sale this year.

The SAQA-TX 2010 trunk show may be going to one more venue, after which the quilts will be returned to the artists.

Juror Appreciation

SAQA member Sue Reno has shared on her blog about the recent Images 2011 show in Pennsylvania. The most striking and delicious thing to me (aside from the beautiful fiber pieces, of course!) was the juror statement she shared.

Ron Rumford, gallery director wrote:

"Upon reviewing all submissions for Images 2011, a particularly strong group of textile works set the bar high. Their structures--piece quilts built from shapes of cloth and constructed by stitching are from a grand tradition of functional and utilitarian work that now straddles high art with highly sophisticated design, pattern and color and the folk art tradition of quilt making. The approach of these 6 artists varies significantly and this strengthened the impact within the overall pool of submissions. It soon became clear that these works would become the fulcrum on which the exhibition wanted to be balanced.

From the show's website:

Images, a juried mid-Atlantic regional exhibition for fine art and fine craft is now in its twenty-third year. It has evolved into a well-respected show for both emerging and established artists.

The San Antonio/Austin Circle has changed its format. Each host(ess) is choosing a design principle on which we will focus at the meeting

Basics: Meeting will run from about 10-2. Jackie will start the meeting by leading a discussion on Monochromatic Color Schemes. Please bring a small collection (5-10 pieces) of fat quarters or other supplies in a single color family. We will break for lunch (Jackie will make a large bowl of lettuce and we can each bring something to add; Jackie will also supply dessert) and then have Show & Tell/Sharing Time.

Have you seen the mini online gallery on SAQA.com called 'Opinion Piecers', curated by Mary Vaneecke?

Mary's description of this collection:

The quilt medium has a long and important history as a way for women to express their opinions. Whether they had the power to vote or not, American women used their needlework to express themselves on many important issues. Some marked a Revolutionary War victory with the quilt block Burgoyne Surrounded, others supported the temperance movement with Drunkard's Path quilts, and still others promoted their favorite political party.

In that spirit, this virtual gallery honors artists who continue that powerful political tradition, whether espousing a message of hope, or speaking truth to power. Some of these works are bright, some express anguish, and some make their point with humor. Each of these quilts is a visual 'Opinion Piece.' I hope you enjoy the medium and the messages.

SAQA Benefit Auction 2011

The 2011 SAQA Benefit Auction begins September 12. Kate Themel, Eileen Doughty and Pat Gould have set up a Picasa album of the 2011 Auction Quilts. There are currently 119 quilts in the album. More will be added as they come in. They are basically the same images you will see when you to SAQA's main website.

Kerr Grabowski Workshop-Houston

Houston Area Fiber Artists (HAFA) extends an invitation to take a Deconstructed Printing workshop with Kerr Grabowski on March 11 and 12. I am aware that this overlaps with the March 12 Circle meeting that is scheduled, but did want to let you know about this opportunity.

Kerr Grabowski’s history as a fiber artist has been marked by her constant experimentation with and innovative approaches to dyeing and screening processes. She developed Deconstructed Screen Printing, a printing, monoprinting technique allowing for a freer, more painterly approach to screen printing. Kerr successfully integrates her love of color, mark-making, and spontaneity with the challenge of creating whimsically elegant contemporary hand painted and screened silk fabrics and wearables.

This workshop is a great boon to creativity. The work is serendipitous making pieces that will be usable in many ways. It will be great fun! Don’t miss it!

Come browse the 26,000 sketchbooks from 100 countries in the touring library. It’s like a concert tour, but with a collection of submitted sketchbooks. Get inspired to keep your pencils sharp!

Thousands of sketchbooks will be exhibited at galleries and museums as they make their way on an 8-stop tour across the country.

After the tour, all sketchbooks will enter into the permanent collection of The Brooklyn Art Library, where they will be barcoded and available for the public to view.

Jack Brockette is a nationally recognized Fiber Artist and teacher. "The Art in Fiber 2011"

The popular Art in Fiber show returns to the Copper Shade Tree with an outstanding group of 22 fiber artists, that were selected by juror, Ginny Eckley, an internationally acclaimed textile artist.

The required theme is "Interpretation." Each artist was given a specific subject matter; a 3-D art piece, a poem, or a music selection. They will create their fiber artwork based on their interpretation of that art form. It will be placed on an 11" x 14" canvas.

In addition, they will create other fiber artwork exclusively for this show. These pieces have never before been seen by the public. Start designing your trip for this exciting event.

Barb Forrister: My Contemplation has been invited to The Trail That Lay Before Them exhibit at the National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center (NHOTIC). They would also like to use this piece for general publicity, such as news releases, the NHOTIC official website, and posters.

Treasured Waters will be in Beneath The Surface special exhibit at the International Quilt Festival in Cincinnati, Ohio along with Welcome To My Garden in the Text On Textiles exhibit.

Copper Shade Tree Gallery will be celebrating its 5th Annual Art In Fiber Show on February 4 through March 12, 2011. If you are wondering what to do in Waco before and after the meeting, here are some exhibitions you might want to view.

The Martin Museum of Art (located in the Hooper-Schaefer Fine Arts Center)":

1. " Soliloquies" paintings by Japanese painter, Makoto Fujimura. His paintings are influenced by the 17th Century decorative screen tradition called Rimpa.
2. Photographs by Dornith Doherty, a contemporary photographer and Professor of Art at UNT.
Across University Parks Drive from the Hooper Schaefer Fine Arts Center is the Mayborn Museum Complex. Featured is the "Sacred Texts, Holy Images: Rouault's Miserere and Chagall's Bible Series Exhibit.
Waco has a new commercial fine arts gallery. The Croft Art Gallery. The exhibition for October will feature the beaded constructions by Leah Force, a Lecturer of Art at Baylor and sculpture pieces by Chuck Jobe, an art studio technician at Baylor. Leah's intricate pieces are akin to Mary Ruth Smith's French knotted pieces. They are heavily beaded with very tiny seed bead, each appearing to be a stitched knot. Mary Ruth will see if Leah could do a talk about her work at the Gallery after the meeting.
Patrick Dougherty, "stick artist" , will be in Waco in October installing 3 sick weavings along the Brazos River in Cameron Park. Google his name and view his amazing work.

2010 SAQA Benefit Auction - Starts September 20th

Over 280 pieces have been donated to the 2010 SAQA Benefit Auction. The funds raised through the Auction are critical to supporting SAQA's exhibitions, catalogs and outreach programs. SAQA's Benefit Auction is our biggest fundraiser. Last year we had donations from 235 members and raised $47,325!!!
This year's Auction will begin on Monday, September 20th at 2:00 Eastern. Price points will again be: $750, $550, $350, $250, $150 and $75. Unsold work will be placed on the SAQA website for a month and then returned to the artist.

Volunteers are needed for the SAQA booth at Festival in Houston. Can you spare an hour or two? Please check your schedule and join us. It is a great time to meet members and network.

We need at least two people in the booth at all time slots. The times that are empty or thin are highlighted in blue. Let's work together to have a great representation of members working the booth at Festival!

If you work a 2-hour shift, you will get in the show free on the day you work and working 6 hours will entitle you to early registration next year! So, email Mary Ann at malittlej@earthlink.net ASAP to get the shift or shifts that you desire.

All Texas members of SAQA are invited to exhibit one or more mini-quilts in an exhibit to hang behind the SAQA Booth at IQF-Houston. The booth is right outside the SAQA “Creative Force 2010” and “Sightlines” exhibits, which will draw a lot of visitors.

This is a showcase for Texas SAQA members. There is no specific theme. It is your choice. This is your chance to get your work seen by up to 50,000 visitors to the Houston show.

After Quilt Festival, the exhibit will circulate around TX to the SAQA Circle meetings, and other Fiber Artists groups.

If you are able to send more than one, the merrier. Should we not be able to hang all at one time, they will be rotated in and out through the days of Quilt Festival.

Entry Fee: $5 to cover return shipping

Size: 9 x 12 – Portrait
A hanging sleeve is not required, but if you already have one on your work, that is okay.

Lark Crafts is very pleased to announce that Martha Sielman will be authoring a new series of art quilt books. A new title will be published each year, starting in 2012. The first volume will focus on nature – animals, insects, fish, birds, microbes, flowers, trees, water, desert, icebergs – whatever inspires you about the natural world.
Subsequent themes may include Landscapes/Cityscapes, Abstract/Geometric Art, People and Portraits, and Art with a Message.
Each volume in this new Art Quilt Portfolio series will include a Feature section, focusing on 15 to 20 artists in depth; this section will include an interview with each artist, several images of works by the featured artist, and a glimpse into each artist's studio. The books will also include a Gallery of works by 70 to 80 selected artists, with one full-page image per artist. Both Feature and Gallery artists will be chosen from this Call for Consideration. Artists who are selected for inclusion in Art Quilt Portfolio: The Natural World will receive full acknowledgement, a complimentary copy of the book, and the option to purchase additional copies from Lark at a discount.
This first title has a very short time frame due to publication schedules. Subsequent titles will be announced with much more notice time.
ELIGIBILITY
This opportunity is open to all quilt artists. This is a Lark Crafts publication, not a Studio Art Quilt Associates publication. Complete entry instructions are on the attached document, which includes the Entry Form and the Photo License Agreement.

If you are a Texas quilter (living in Texas) who does pretty remarkable work (even if it's just in your own opinion!), then this message is for you.

Nancy Puentes and I are in the final agonizing throes of selecting quilts for our third book with the University of Texas: Lone Stars--Texas Quilts Today. This will join the other two Lone Star books we've written, one covering 1836-1936 and the other covering 1936-1986. Despite the name, the books cover all types of quilts, not just Lone Stars. Texas Quilts Today will come out in the fall of 2011, to coincide with the opening of the new Texas Quilt Museum and to mark our Dequasbicentennial or the 175th anniversary of Texas' independence. (By the way, we hate that word--Dequasbicentennial--but it's the best we could find on Wikipedia, so if anybody has a good, easy to say, easy to spell alternative for 175th anniversary, boy, would we love to hear from you!)

We are looking for traditional quilts and art quilts. We already have made preliminary selections from the many wonderful pieces we have to choose from--a plethora of riches!--but we'll never be satisfied until we feel we have seen everything that's out there that might be eligible. We've reviewed more than two decades of quilts entered in IQA's annual judged show in Houston; we've reviewed many of the Texas quilts in recent special exhibits at one of our International Quilt Festivals; we have guild recommendations and have requested more...and now we are asking you.

We cannot accept images of quilts that are Journal Quilt size--that's just too small for this book. We can accept mini-quilts, however, though they should be at least 12" on each side. Otherwise, there are no size limitations. We cannot accept garments. Workmanship will definitely be a consideration. (I know the argument that artists shouldn't have to concern themselves with workmanship...I just don't personally agree with it...and since this is Nancy's and my book, we get to make the rules!)

If you have any particularly nice quilts that you made IN TEXAS (required), why don't you email me digital images right away? Email images to: spexhibits@gmail.com (We are using that address because we do not want our regular emails to crash from an overabundance of incoming images. That's a problem for us, but it's a bigger problem for you if you are trying to send us an image and find it impossible.) If you made the quilt in Texas and then moved out-of-state, it's still ok to enter the quilt. But if you lived elsewhere when you made the quilt, and then moved to Texas, then it would not be eligible. Quilts must be MADE in Texas. We are looking for pieces made between 1987 and today.

We need full size and close-up shots, with the year it was made and measurements, plus the name of the quilt, your name, and where the piece was made. Please put that information in one line to make it easy for us to copy and put under the quilt as a caption. You do need to send only your very best, because what we already have is pretty terrific. And the only promise I can make is that we will carefully consider everything that's sent to us before July 12. If there are other really, really good Texas quilters whom you know, work with, admire, etc...please help us spread the word. Suggest that they send digital images of their work to us, following the guidelines I mentioned above. Again, tell them to use the special email address: spexhibits@gmail.com

My instinct tells me that there are super quilts out there that we are not seeing. This whole selection process is so challenging that I almost hope I am mistaken and that there are NOT these wonderful quilts out there...but I don't think I'm wrong. Remember July 12 is the deadline and spexhibits@gmail.com is the email address to use! I look forward to seeing what you send us.

The funds raised through the Auction are critical to supporting SAQA's exhibitions, catalogs and outreach programs. SAQA's Benefit Auction is our biggest fundraiser. Last year we had donations from 235 members and raised $47,325!!!

This year's Auction will begin on Monday, September 20th at 2:00 Eastern. Price points will again be: $750, $550, $350, $250, $150 and $75. Unsold work will be placed on the SAQA website for a month and then returned to the artist. A preview of donations already received has been posted. Start your shopping list.

Theme: Homelessness exists all around the world. There are a myriad of
conditions that result in homelessness: poverty, unemployment, lack of
education, drug addiction, abandonment, mental illness, war and civil unrest,
along with man-made and natural disasters. This exhibit is taking a look at
homelessness in all its implications.

Eligibility and Guidelines:
• Entry is by digital images only (directions below).
• You may submit up to 3 entries.
• Quilts must be created after 2005 and not shown in a previous SAQA exhibition.
• Entries must be 24" - 40" width, and 48" maximum in length
• 3-D, free-standing works will NOT be accepted.
• Artwork must meet the SAQA definition of an art quilt: a contemporary artwork
exploring and expressing aesthetic concerns common to the whole range of visual
arts: painting, printmaking, photography, graphic design, assemblage and
sculpture, which retains, through materials or technique, a clear relationship to the
folk art quilt from which it descends.
• Artists are responsible for shipping and insurance to Kathleen McCabe in
Coronado, CA and for return shipping to their homes from the last venue. SAQA
will arrange to insure the artwork during the exhibitions and while it travels.
• Artwork MAY be for sale. SAQA will charge a 25% commission on all sales;
exhibiting venues may also charge a commission, but total commission will never
exceed 50%.
• Work MUST be available to travel for up to a year. Travel details to follow.

We will use various printing techniques to dye cotton fabric, including stamping with sponges, rubber stamps(including some large format of her own design) and household items to create patterns in multiple colors and layers. You will end up with a bag of fabric to take home
to "batch" overnight, then wash out in the morning.

This workshop is great for those who have never dyed as well as more experienced dyers who want to learn new techniques with a group. We will play and have fun.

At the workshop, Ruthie will have cotton PFD (prepared for dyeing) fabric in two weaves for $5.00 per yard, plus some silk scarves at cost.

Quilting Florida Natural ll opens this weekend at the Florida Museum of Natural History in Gainesville, Florida. The show hangs until April 25 and includes a piece by Gay Young Ousley entitled LOGGERHEAD. Each quilt in the show depicts some element of Florida's environment.

Susie Monday was recently published in the November-December issue of Quilting Arts magazine with an article about printing fabric using water soluble media and polymer medium. Susie has also been invited to be part of the next season of taping for the PBS Quilting Arts television series which will go into production this March in the Cleveland production studio.

Deborah Boschert is published in two new magazines. The Winter 2009 Art Quilting Studio includes a profile of Deborah and several pictures from her studio. She also wrote an article about improvisational embroidery for the All By Hand section called "Composing Spontaneity." The Winter 2009 issue of Sew Somerset also includes Deborah's work. She wrote a how-to article titled "Mushroom Story Scrolls." Both of these new magazines include an inspiring variety of artists, styles and techniques for art quilters and fiber artists.

San Antonio/Austin Circle - November 21, 2009

The San Antonio and Austin Circles met at Laurie Brainerd's loft in San Antonio. After a delightful potluck lunch, we quickly got down to the business at hand.

We discussed the survey results, reiterating that we all must ask for what we want of the Circle. The combined Austin and San Antonio circles are meeting on the 2nd Saturday of the month. The January and March meetings have already been scheduled in Austin and will remain unchanged. In May, it will bounce to San Antonio. The host gets to decide the time the meeting starts.

We then went on to "Tells," which were more art business related. A lively discussion ensued. One of the outcomes is a plan to incorporate formal critique sessions into the meetings. It will start when we line up a facilitator hopefully for the March meeting, but knowing that logistics will have to remain flexible.

A group challenge was made for those that like having deadlines to keep them focused. The word that was randomly picked for inspiration is "covert."

Afterwards, we had our "Shows" and then ended the meeting with a quick tour of Laurie's studio.

It was wonderful to see the group, which has been meeting for a year now, really gelling and ready to take the group up a notch with more activities and articulating individuals' needs of the Circle.
